Lily Z. Shell
Lily is a dramaturg and costume designer based out of New York City and Madison, Wisconsin. She is currently pursuing her MA in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a focus in dramaturgy and a certificate in Visual Cultures.
She completed her Costume Apprenticeship at The Juilliard School in 2018. She graduated from Vassar College in 2016 with a BA in American Studies with foci in popular culture and Africana Studies.
Her theatrical interests include dramaturgy through design, collaborative theatrical processes, and costuming for dance.
She comes to both dramaturgy and costume design through a passion for theater that she has held since her early teenage years. In particular, she believes that her liberal arts coursework in American Studies strongly informs her work, which is equally as influenced by popular culture as it is by historical and textual contexts. Her interest in costume design comes from a deep appreciation for the role of clothing in character, personality, and history, and she brings to her work a love for and focus on storytelling and character-building.
